Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

AeroVironment builds small military drones. Two kinds matter: reconnaissance drones a soldier launches by hand to see over the next hill (Puma, Raven), and loitering munitions — drones that carry a warhead, circle a target area, and strike on command (Switchblade). After its 2025 merger with BlueHalo, it also builds counter-drone systems, directed-energy weapons, and space and laser-communications technology.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

By selling systems and replenishment to the US Department of Defense and allied militaries. Loitering munitions are consumed when used — every Switchblade fired is a Switchblade reordered — which turns battlefield adoption into a recurring replenishment business, plus training, spares, and support contracts around the installed base.

WHY WE TRACK IT

The Ukraine war rewrote the currencies of war around cheap, attritable, precise mass — and AeroVironment is the West's incumbent in exactly that category. It is also the cleanest test of the era's hardest question: can a battlefield-proven product stay defensible when a $500 hobby-parts drone does some of the same job?

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Every Western army now wants what Ukraine proved works: precise strike power in a soldier's backpack. AeroVironment sells the version armies are actually allowed to buy — the question is whether being the certified, procurable choice holds its value as the underlying technology gets cheap.
