Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Alphabet is the parent of Google: the search engine most of the world uses, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Gmail, Maps, a top-three cloud business, the DeepMind AI lab behind the Gemini models, and moonshot bets like the Waymo self-driving unit.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Overwhelmingly by selling ads — against search results, YouTube videos, and across the web. Google Cloud rents computing power and AI services to businesses and is the fastest-growing large piece. Everything else, from Waymo to hardware, is small by comparison.

WHY WE TRACK IT

Alphabet is where the central question of the AI era gets answered: can an incumbent whose profits come from links survive a technology that gives answers instead? It is also the only hyperscaler that designs its own AI chips at scale — the one proven alternative to buying from NVIDIA.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Alphabet owns every layer of the AI stack — models, chips, cloud, and distribution — which no competitor can say. The thesis lives or dies on one question: whether AI-generated answers erode the search-ad economics that fund all of it faster than Alphabet can monetize what replaces them.
