Red Cardinal Snapshot
WHAT IT DOES
Amazon runs two systems most companies couldn't build one of: AWS, the world's largest cloud — the rented computing that much of the internet and now much of AI runs on — and a physical delivery network of warehouses, planes, trucks, and vans that moves packages to most American doorsteps in a day or two.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
The store brings the revenue; the cloud brings the profit. Retail runs on thin margins by design — scale is the strategy — while AWS converts rented computing into the operating income that funds everything else. Advertising, the quiet third pool, sells the most valuable shelf space on the internet: the top of Amazon's own search results.
WHY WE TRACK IT
AWS capex is one of the heartbeats of the entire AI infrastructure thesis — every data center it builds pulls on chips, power, cooling, and land. And AWS monetizes AI twice: it rents NVIDIA GPUs at market rates while pushing its own Trainium and Inferentia chips as the cheaper house brand, with Anthropic as the anchor tenant proving the silicon at frontier scale.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Amazon is a landlord twice over — of computing and of delivery. The thesis is that both tollbooths keep compounding: AI workloads have to run somewhere, packages have to move somehow, and Amazon owns a default answer to both. The question is whether the AI buildout pays for itself before the capex bill compresses the cash flow that funds it.
