WHAT IT DOES
Anthropic builds the Claude family of frontier AI models and sells them mostly to businesses — through an API developers pay per token to use, through cloud marketplaces run by Amazon and Google, and through products like Claude Code, which turns the model into a software-engineering agent. It was founded in 2021 by researchers who left OpenAI, and it publishes much of its safety research openly: constitutional AI, a training method where the model critiques its own outputs against written principles, and interpretability work that tries to see what is happening inside the model rather than just measuring what comes out.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Per-token usage, weighted heavily toward enterprises. Rather than chasing consumer scale the way OpenAI did, Anthropic's revenue concentrates in API and enterprise customers — and, by press accounts, above all in coding: Claude's strength at writing software made it the default engine inside many developer tools and agentic-coding products. Consumer subscriptions exist but are the smaller engine. Anthropic is private and discloses nothing we can audit; every characterization of its revenue mix is a press report or a company claim, and we treat it as such.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Subscription consumers signal curiosity; enterprises paying per token for code and agents signal production value. That makes Anthropic's growth the cleanest read on whether AI is actually doing economic work — the question underneath half the public-company theses we cover. It is also the node where hyperscaler capital, compute, and competition tangle most visibly: its lead investors are its rivals are its landlords.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
If AI's real economy grows, Anthropic's per-token enterprise revenue grows with it — that is the exposure. The structure is the catch: Amazon and Google supply its capital and its compute while building competing models, every model generation costs more than the last, and the coding revenue that carries the story is exactly what rivals and open-weight models target. The thesis is adoption compounding faster than the treadmill speeds up.
