WHAT IT DOES
BAE Systems is Britain's defense prime and something no other company is: a foreign contractor trusted inside America's crown-jewel programs. Its firewalled US subsidiary builds electronic warfare for the F-35, combat vehicles, and precision munitions, while the UK parent builds the submarines that carry Britain's nuclear weapons, Typhoon fighters, artillery shells, and — with Japan and Italy — the Tempest sixth-generation fighter.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Governments sign contracts measured in decades, not quarters. A ballistic-missile submarine takes over ten years to build and thirty to support; a fighter program spans generations of engineers. Much of the revenue is cost-plus or long-term contracted work with support tails, which means the order backlog — not this year's headlines — is the business.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Our defense thesis says the West is rearming for a decade. BAE is the test of whether the diversified incumbent model wins that decade: it touches the submarine wave (Dreadnought, AUKUS), the fighter race (Typhoon, GCAP), the munitions rebuild (155mm), and the US budget — all in one sterling-denominated order book.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
BAE is the tortoise of the rearmament decade. It lacks Rheinmetall's torque to European budget upside, but it holds something rarer: a decade-plus backlog spanning three navies, two fighter programs, and the only Special Security Agreement seat at America's top table. The bet is on duration and diversification, not acceleration — and the risks are its customers' finances, not its demand.
