Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Berkshire Hathaway is a holding company that owns entire businesses outright — a railroad (BNSF), a major utility (Berkshire Hathaway Energy), insurers (GEICO, a huge reinsurance book), and dozens of manufacturers and retailers — plus a large portfolio of stakes in public companies. Think of it as a private cross-section of American industry with a stock ticker.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Two engines. The operating businesses earn ordinary profits from freight, electricity, insurance premiums, and products. The quieter engine is insurance float: premiums customers pay today against claims paid years from now — money Berkshire holds and invests in the meantime. When the insurance is underwritten with discipline, that float is borrowed money that costs less than nothing.

WHY WE TRACK IT

Berkshire is the market's reference allocator. Where it deploys capital — and, just as loudly, where it refuses to — is information about prices across the whole economy. In 2026 it is also the cleanest live experiment in markets: Warren Buffett handed the CEO job to Greg Abel on January 1, and every allocator on earth is watching whether the machine was a system or a person.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

For sixty years, cheap float plus patient ownership plus one exceptional decision-maker compounded into the benchmark. The float and the ownership structure survive the handover by design. Whether the judgment does is the question — and the record cash pile Abel inherited means the first big answer will be public.
