Red Cardinal Snapshot
WHAT IT DOES
BlackRock manages other people's money at a scale no firm has managed before — pensions, retirement accounts, sovereign funds, and everyday savers — mostly through iShares index funds that own a slice of nearly everything. It also sells Aladdin, the risk-management operating system that thousands of institutional investors use to see what they own and what could go wrong.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Fees, charged as a small percentage of assets under management. Index funds charge almost nothing but hold trillions; active funds, private-markets funds, and technology subscriptions charge more on less. The business is a toll on the world's savings — tiny per dollar, enormous in aggregate.
WHY WE TRACK IT
BlackRock sits at the intersection of two theses we cover: it is the largest single expression of how modern markets allocate capital, and — through its infrastructure acquisitions — it is becoming a major owner of the data centers, pipelines, and grid assets the AI buildout needs. When BlackRock changes what it buys, capital flows change shape.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
The quiet owner of everything. Index funds made BlackRock the default shareholder of the modern market; Aladdin made it the market's plumbing; now it is spending heavily to own the private assets — infrastructure, credit, data — where fees haven't been competed to zero. The question is whether the second act's fees arrive faster than the first act's fees erode.
