Red Cardinal Snapshot
WHAT IT DOES
Builders FirstSource supplies homebuilders with the materials a house is made of — lumber, roof trusses, wall panels, windows, doors, millwork — through a national network of yards and manufacturing plants assembled from what used to be thousands of independent local lumberyards.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Two businesses wear one uniform: a distribution arm that passes commodity lumber through at thin markups, and a manufacturing arm that builds trusses, panels, and millwork to order at much richer margins. The strategy is to keep shifting the mix from the first business to the second.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Every housing thesis we cover — the frozen resale market, the structural undersupply, the builders' rate-buydown machine — eventually has to become physical: sticks, trusses, and framing crews. Builders FirstSource sits at exactly that layer, so its volumes and mix tell us whether the supply response is actually happening.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
America is short of houses and short of the workers who frame them. A company that consolidated the builders' supply chain and moves framing work from the jobsite into its own factories gets paid for solving both problems at once — as long as builders keep starting houses.
