Red Cardinal Snapshot
WHAT IT DOES
CME Group runs the exchanges where the benchmark futures on US interest rates, the S&P 500, crude oil, natural gas, gold, and crops are traded — the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the Chicago Board of Trade, NYMEX, and COMEX — plus the clearinghouse that stands behind every trade and guarantees both sides get paid.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
A small fee on every contract traded and cleared, plus subscriptions for the market data those trades generate. The quiet engine is vertical clearing: every contract CME lists can only be cleared at CME, so once a position is open, the customer relationship is captive until it closes.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Nearly every thesis we cover eventually becomes a price on a CME screen. 'What will the Fed do' is SOFR and Treasury futures. Energy scarcity is Henry Hub and WTI. Copper is COMEX. When we say markets are pricing something, this is usually the market doing the pricing.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
CME is the tollbooth on changing your mind. Every time anyone — a bank, a farmer, an oil producer, a hedge fund — updates a view on rates, energy, or metals, CME collects a fee. The more uncertain the world, the more views get updated, which makes volatility itself the product.
