Red Cardinal Snapshot
WHAT IT DOES
Coinbase runs the largest U.S.-regulated marketplace for buying, selling, and storing digital assets — and, increasingly, the vaults and plumbing behind everyone else's crypto products: the custodian holding the coins inside Wall Street's spot ETFs, the distribution engine for the USDC stablecoin, and the operator of Base, its own blockchain network.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Trading fees are still the engine — a cut of every buy and sell, which surges in bull markets and evaporates in winters. The counterweight is a growing services business: interest earned on the reserves backing USDC (shared with Circle), custody fees from institutions, staking, subscriptions like Coinbase One, and derivatives trading abroad.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Coinbase's revenue mix is the honest telemetry of crypto's identity crisis. Each quarter shows you what the asset class is actually being used for — speculation (trading fees), payments and settlement (stablecoin income), or institutional reserve-holding (custody). No other single company reports that answer.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Coinbase spent a decade paying compliance costs its rivals dodged; when regulation finally arrived, those costs became the moat. The bet now is whether it can turn a boom-and-bust toll booth into a diversified financial institution before the next crypto winter tests the conversion.
