WHAT IT DOES
Danaher makes the tools that make modern medicine. Its Cytiva business supplies the bioreactors, chromatography resins, and filtration media used to grow and purify biologic drugs — antibodies, peptides, cell and gene therapies, vaccines. Cepheid makes the molecular diagnostic tests hospitals run at the bedside, Beckman Coulter the lab analyzers behind routine blood work, Leica the microscopes and tissue-diagnostics systems pathologists read, and Aldevron the DNA and enzymes that feed genetic-medicine programs.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Partly by selling capital equipment — a bioreactor is a large, lumpy purchase — but mostly by selling the consumables that equipment eats. Every batch of drug substance consumes fresh resins, filters, single-use bags, and buffers, which must be repurchased batch after batch for the life of the product. Diagnostics works the same way: place the instrument, then sell the test cartridges forever.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Healthcare's biggest current shock, the GLP-1 era, is fundamentally a manufacturing story, and aging populations keep pushing more volume through diagnostic labs. Danaher sits one layer beneath both. It lets you own the growth of biologic medicine without having to pick which molecule wins — and it shows, in real time, how much capacity the industry is actually building rather than announcing.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Sell the razor blades that regulators have written into the process. Once a drugmaker validates Danaher's resin or filter into an approved manufacturing process, switching suppliers means re-filing with the FDA — so the consumable revenue attaches to the drug's whole commercial life. The question is not whether biologics grow; it is how violently the ordering cycle swings around that growth.
