WHAT IT DOES
Deere builds the machines that grow food — tractors, combines, sprayers, and planters — plus construction and forestry equipment. Layered on top of the iron is a technology stack most people never see: satellite guidance accurate to centimeters, cameras that tell a crop from a weed at highway speed, and tractors that till fields with no one in the cab.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Equipment sales through a dealer network, financing through John Deere Financial, and decades of parts and service on every machine in the field. The new layer is software: precision-ag features sold as subscriptions and upgrades, with a stated ambition to price some of them per acre — turning a machine sold once into a service billed every season.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Agriculture is where physical AI stopped being a demo. Fields are structured environments, the work is repetitive, and farm labor is genuinely scarce — so autonomy pays for itself here before it does almost anywhere else. Deere is also the cleanest test of a bigger question we track everywhere: can recurring software genuinely decouple an industrial company from its cycle?
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Deere is trying to convert a brutally cyclical machinery business into a recurring software business, using the largest connected farm-equipment fleet in the world as its distribution. The technology is real and shipping. The open question is whether software revenue can grow through an ag downturn — because if precision-ag spending rises and falls with crop prices, Deere hasn't escaped the cycle; it has just added a feature to it.
