Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Freeport-McMoRan digs copper out of the ground at industrial scale: the Grasberg complex in Indonesia (one of the largest copper-gold deposits on earth), a belt of mines across Arizona and New Mexico including Morenci, and large operations in Peru and Chile. Gold and molybdenum come out of the same rock and help pay the bills.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

It sells copper at whatever the world price is that day — Freeport is a price taker, not a price maker. The business is a spread: the market price of copper minus the cost of getting it out of increasingly stubborn rock. Gold and molybdenum byproducts, especially Grasberg's gold, quietly lower the net cost of every pound.

WHY WE TRACK IT

Every thesis on this site that involves electricity eventually becomes a copper order — transmission lines, transformers, data-center busways, EVs. Supply cannot answer quickly: a major new mine takes fifteen-plus years from discovery to production, ore grades are declining globally, and no new deposits at Grasberg's scale have been found in decades. Freeport is the biggest US-listed way to own that arithmetic.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Demand for copper is being written into every electrification plan on earth, and the supply side physically cannot respond inside a decade. The catch: copper is a China-macro cyclical first and an electrification secular second — we track whether the cycle buries the trend before the trend pays.
