WHAT IT DOES
HII builds the US Navy's biggest ships. Its Newport News yard in Virginia is the sole builder of nuclear aircraft carriers and one of only two yards that build nuclear submarines; its Ingalls yard in Mississippi builds amphibious ships and destroyers. A third division, Mission Technologies, sells defense electronics, unmanned systems, and services.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Almost entirely from one customer: the US government. Ships are ordered years in advance under multi-year contracts, so revenue is a slow-moving backlog measured in decades — the risk isn't finding work, it's delivering it on time and on cost.
WHY WE TRACK IT
The rearmament decade runs through shipyards. The Navy's carrier and submarine plans — and America's AUKUS promise to Australia — all assume HII can build faster than it currently can. This profile is the industrial-base story at its starkest: demand set by law, supply set by labor.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
HII is a monopoly with a captive customer and more demand than it can deliver — the rare business whose constraint is not orders but skilled hands. If the yards can hire and keep welders, the backlog is a decade of visible growth; if they can't, that same backlog turns into schedule slips and charges.
