Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Home Depot runs the largest home-improvement retail network in the United States — the orange-aproned warehouse stores — and, increasingly, a wholesale distribution business that delivers roofing, wallboard, and building materials straight to professional contractors' job sites.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Selling tools, lumber, appliances, and building materials to two very different customers: the weekend do-it-yourselfer and the professional contractor. The Pro is the quiet majority — a plumber who buys every week is worth far more than a homeowner who buys twice a year, and the SRS and GMS acquisitions were built to capture more of that contractor's total spend.

WHY WE TRACK IT

Housing is one of our pillar systems, and Home Depot is its repair-and-remodel gauge. When rate lock-in freezes people in place, when the housing stock ages, when owners renovate instead of move — all of that shows up in one company's comparable sales before it shows up almost anywhere else.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

America's houses keep getting older, and old houses demand money. Tens of millions of homes need roofs, water heaters, and kitchens on a schedule set by physics, not by mood — and Home Depot collects a toll on that maintenance cycle whether the housing market itself is hot or frozen.
