WHAT IT DOES
Linde separates air into oxygen, nitrogen, and argon, reforms natural gas into hydrogen, and purifies specialty gases like helium — then delivers them to nearly every industry that makes physical things: steel mills, refineries, chemical plants, food processors, hospitals, and semiconductor fabs. An engineering arm designs and builds the gas plants themselves.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Three tiers by customer size. The biggest customers get a gas plant built on their own site under contracts running ten to twenty years, with payments owed largely regardless of how much gas they draw. Mid-sized customers get liquid gases trucked in from Linde's regional plants. Small customers buy cylinders. The on-site tier is the crown jewel: an annuity dressed as a chemicals company.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Industrial gases are the invisible layer under almost every system we cover — steel needs oxygen, hospitals need medical oxygen, food needs nitrogen freezing, and a leading-edge semiconductor fab is one of the most gas-hungry buildings ever constructed, with ultra-high-purity nitrogen and specialty gases as a meaningful running cost. Every new fab, every reshored factory, and every serious hydrogen project needs a gas supplier signed up early — and there are only a few to choose from.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Linde sells substances nobody thinks about and nobody can operate without, under decade-plus contracts customers physically cannot leave — the plant is bolted into their facility. It is one of capitalism's best business models hiding inside one of its dullest product categories.
