Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Micron makes memory chips — DRAM, the fast working memory computers think with, and NAND, the storage they remember with. Its most important product is HBM (high-bandwidth memory): stacks of DRAM bonded directly beside AI processors so data can reach the chip fast enough to keep it busy.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

By selling memory in volume — historically a brutal commodity business where prices swing with supply gluts and shortages. HBM changes the texture: it is qualified part-by-part with customers like NVIDIA, priced like an engineered component, and increasingly sold under long-dated agreements rather than on the spot market.

WHY WE TRACK IT

An AI accelerator is only as fast as the memory feeding it — a starved GPU is an expensive space heater. Only three companies on earth make HBM at scale (SK Hynix, Samsung, Micron), and Micron is the only one headquartered and increasingly manufacturing in the United States. Memory supply quietly gates the entire AI buildout we cover.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

A famously boom-bust commodity business is being partially converted into a sole-source-like component business by AI. The thesis is the word 'partially' — how much of Micron becomes an engineered-component maker, and how much remains a cyclical commodity producer waiting for the next glut.
