Red Cardinal Snapshot
WHAT IT DOES
NextEra Energy is two companies in one: Florida Power & Light, the regulated utility that keeps the lights on for most of Florida, and NextEra Energy Resources, the development arm that builds wind farms, solar fields, and grid-scale batteries across the country — more of them than anyone else in America.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
FPL earns a regulated return on the grid it builds and operates — steady, rate-base income approved by Florida regulators. Energy Resources signs long-term contracts (power purchase agreements, or PPAs — multi-decade deals to sell electricity at a fixed price) before it builds a project, so most of the cash flow is locked in before the first panel goes up.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Electricity is the binding constraint on the AI buildout, and every answer to the shortage has a wait time: gas turbines are back-ordered into the 2030s, new nuclear takes a decade. Renewables plus storage is the one new megawatt that can be built in a year or two — and NextEra builds more of it than anyone.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
When demand shows up faster than supply can, the winner is whoever can build fastest at scale. NextEra's wind, solar, and battery machine is the fastest deployable electron in America — the question is whether speed keeps winning against data centers' growing preference for around-the-clock firm power.
