Red Cardinal Snapshot
WHAT IT DOES
Northrop Grumman builds the hardest things the Pentagon buys: the B-21 Raider stealth bomber, the Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile that will replace fifty-year-old Minuteman silos, military satellites, solid rocket motors, and the radars and electronics that tie them together.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Almost entirely from governments — the US Department of Defense above all. Long-term contracts pay Northrop to develop and then produce weapons over decades. Some contracts reimburse costs plus a fee; others fix the price up front, which is where the B-21 story gets interesting.
WHY WE TRACK IT
The rearmament decade runs through nuclear deterrence, and deterrence runs through Northrop. No other company holds two legs of the triad's modernization at once. How these programs perform tells you whether the defense industrial base can actually deliver what the budget promises.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Northrop owns must-do, multi-decade programs whose demand is set by deterrence policy, not budget fashion. The catch: must-do does not mean profitable — the taxpayer's schedule risk has been shifted onto the contractor's margin, and the next few years reveal how much.
