WHAT IT DOES
OpenAI builds frontier AI models — the GPT family and its reasoning successors — and sells access to them three ways: ChatGPT subscriptions for consumers, enterprise plans for companies, and an API that lets other software call the models the way apps call the internet. Behind the products sits the real activity: buying more computing power than any company has ever contracted for, because training and running frontier models consumes data centers the way airlines consume fuel.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Subscriptions and API usage — ChatGPT plans for individuals and businesses, plus metered charges when other companies build on the models. How much money, we cannot tell you: OpenAI is private, and its numbers reach the public through fundraising leaks and partner disclosures, both of which are selected to persuade. What is not in dispute is the direction of the cash: press reporting consistently describes spending on compute that dwarfs revenue, which is why the funding rounds keep coming.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Not primarily for OpenAI itself — no share of it trades — but because its demand underwrites public companies we do cover. Oracle's contracted backlog, CoreWeave's fleet economics, Microsoft's cloud story, NVIDIA's order book, Broadcom's custom-silicon ambitions, and the power buildout behind Stargate all lean, to different degrees, on one private company's willingness and ability to keep paying for compute. OpenAI is the keystone of the arch; this profile maps the load it carries.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
ChatGPT in November 2022 was the demand shock that started the AI capex supercycle — it made 'compute' a boardroom word and turned data centers into the decade's defining infrastructure trade. The thesis here is not that OpenAI wins AI; it is that OpenAI's demand is now structural to a dozen public-company stories, so the most important question in our AI coverage is whether that demand is durable — and the honest answer is that it rests on burn, leaked numbers, and suppliers who invest in their own customer.
