Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Oscar Health sells individual health insurance, almost entirely on the Affordable Care Act marketplaces — the exchanges where people who don't get coverage through an employer buy their own plans. It was founded in 2012 on a simple observation: the product most insurers actually deliver is confusion — indecipherable bills, unreachable customer service, no idea what anything costs. Oscar built the opposite: a member app people genuinely use, virtual-first care built in, and its own technology stack running everything from claims to care routing, which it also licenses to other insurers as +Oscar.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Premiums, like any insurer — members and the federal government (through premium subsidies) pay in, Oscar pays medical claims out, and the margin is what's left after care and overhead. The design bet is that better software lowers both sides of that equation: members who can navigate care in an app use the right care sooner, and a modern claims stack costs less to run than the decades-old systems incumbents drag behind them.

WHY WE TRACK IT

Oscar is the purest listed play on the individual insurance market — the segment that grows if employer coverage keeps slowly unbundling, and shrinks if Washington lets the marketplace's subsidies lapse. That makes it two teaching objects in one: what happens when a software company takes on an incumbent industry's core product, and what happens when a business model's biggest variable is a policy decision it doesn't control.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Oscar bet everything on one market: individuals buying their own insurance. If enhanced subsidies survive and employers keep handing workers money to shop for themselves, Oscar is positioned better than anyone. If the subsidies die, the healthiest customers leave first, the pool gets sicker and pricier, and Oscar wears that outcome with no other business to absorb it.
