Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Regeneron invents antibody medicines — engineered proteins that bind one precise target in the body and switch it off. Its best known products are Eylea for the retinal diseases that blind older people, Dupixent for inflammatory conditions like eczema, asthma, and COPD (marketed with Sanofi), and Libtayo in cancer. What makes the company unusual is the machinery underneath: genetically humanized mice, called VelocImmune, that produce fully human antibodies on demand, turning discovery into something closer to a repeatable manufacturing process.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Three ways. It sells its own drugs — Eylea, injected into the eye by retina specialists and reimbursed through the medical benefit rather than the pharmacy counter. It collects a share of profits on drugs it invented but a partner sells, above all Dupixent with Sanofi and Eylea outside the United States with Bayer. And it licenses or co-develops its discovery platform, so other people's programs pay for the machine that made them.

WHY WE TRACK IT

Regeneron is the clearest test in the RC 100 of whether a drug-discovery platform is a real durable asset or just a story told between products. It also sits directly in two currents reshaping healthcare: aging demographics, which create the retinal-disease demand Eylea was built for, and the genetics-driven search for new drug targets — where Regeneron's answer is to sequence millions of real human genomes rather than model them.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

The market prices Regeneron as an Eylea-decline story: a mature franchise losing ground to biosimilars, with one partner-shared blockbuster carrying the rest. The company argues it is a discovery-engine story: the mice, the genetics data, and the antibody-engineering skill will keep producing, and the products are just outputs. The thesis is which of those two the pipeline proves — and the burden of proof sits squarely on Regeneron.
