WHAT IT DOES
Rockwell Automation makes the control systems that run factories: the Allen-Bradley programmable logic controllers (PLCs) that tell every machine on a production line what to do and when, plus the drives, sensors, safety systems, and industrial software that design, monitor, and maintain the whole operation. If a US plant fills bottles, welds car bodies, or packages pills, there is a good chance a Rockwell controller is making the decisions.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
It sells control hardware to the machine builders and manufacturers who construct production lines, then keeps selling to those same plants for decades — spare parts, upgrades, engineering services, and increasingly software subscriptions — because once a factory standardizes on an automation architecture, it rarely leaves.
WHY WE TRACK IT
The reshoring thesis says American manufacturing capacity is being rebuilt — chip fabs, battery plants, pharma lines, tariff-motivated relocations. Every one of those projects needs a control system before it can make anything, and Rockwell's North American concentration, long its knock against global Siemens, makes it the purest listed expression of whether the capex actually comes home.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
A factory standardizes on one control architecture for decades, its engineers train on it for careers, and switching means re-engineering the plant — the same training-hours moat as Intuitive Surgical, in overalls. If reshoring is real, Rockwell is the toll booth; the honest test is orders, not announcements.
