WHAT IT DOES
Southern Copper digs copper out of four enormous open-pit mines — Toquepala and Cuajone in Peru, Buenavista and La Caridad in Mexico — and processes it into refined metal, with silver, molybdenum, and zinc coming out of the same rock as by-products.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
It sells copper at whatever the world price is that day. Because its ore bodies are rich and its operations are integrated from pit to refinery, its cost to produce a pound sits near the bottom of the global curve — so it earns money at prices that force weaker miners to shut down, and earns spectacularly when prices run.
WHY WE TRACK IT
The electrification of everything — the grid buildout, data centers, transmission lines, transformers — is ultimately a claim on copper. Southern Copper holds among the largest copper reserves of any listed company, with mine lives measured in generations rather than decades. If the copper decade happens, this is the company built to still be standing at the end of it.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Own the best rocks at the lowest cost and simply wait — every cycle, every shortage, every price spike eventually comes to you. The catch: the rocks sit in exactly two countries, and both get a vote on when you're allowed to dig.
