Spotify is where a large share of the connected world listens: music, podcasts, and now audiobooks, streamed to hundreds of millions of people across commutes, workouts, kitchens, and moods. Its algorithms decide what most of those people hear next, and its annual Wrapped recap turned private listening data into a global cultural ritual.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Mostly paid subscriptions, plus advertising on the free tier. But here is the structural fact that explains everything else: the majority of every music dollar Spotify collects passes straight through to rights holders — chiefly three major labels that control the catalog it cannot operate without. Spotify keeps the remainder, which is why its margins have always been thinner than its scale suggests.
