WHAT IT DOES
Union Pacific runs one of the two great freight railroads west of the Mississippi, moving grain, chemicals, lumber, cars, coal, industrial metals, and truck-trailer-sized intermodal containers across tens of thousands of miles of track it owns outright. If it was grown, mined, refined, or unloaded at a West Coast port, there is a good chance it rode Union Pacific steel at some point.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
It charges for moving heavy things long distances — a toll per carload — over track only it can use. The economics are brutally simple and brutally capital-hungry: enormous fixed costs to maintain the network, so every extra carload over the same track is close to pure profit, and every lost carload hurts twice.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Two reasons. First, the carload data: railroads report weekly volumes by commodity, which makes Union Pacific one of the most honest real-time indicators of American physical activity — grain, construction lumber, chemicals, autos — long before official statistics catch up. Second, the live event: its announced merger with Norfolk Southern would end the century-old practice of handing freight between eastern and western railroads at the Mississippi, and the regulator's answer will reshape the industry either way.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Union Pacific owns a route network assembled under an 1862 act of Congress that could never be permitted or purchased again — an irreplaceable asset with exactly one competitor in the West. The bet is that this franchise compounds quietly for decades; the wildcard is whether regulators let it become half of the first coast-to-coast railroad.
